All About the TELPAS Test


Your Child and the TELPAS Test



TEA designed the Texas English Language Proficiency Assessment System (TELPAS) to assess the progress that emergent bilingual (EB) students make in learning the English language. To view other resources regarding EB students, visit the English Learner Portal.


Information for Parents About the TELPAS Test


Who? Students in grades K–12 who have been identified as an EB student.
What? TELPAS is an assessment program for EB students in Texas public schools who are learning the English language. The letters TELPAS stand for the Texas English Language Proficiency Assessment System.
When? TELPAS tests are given in the spring during a six-week administration window.
Why? TELPAS tests are designed to measure the progress that each EB student makes in becoming proficient in the use of academic English.
How? For students in kindergarten and grade 1, trained teachers evaluate students through classroom observations. Students in grades 2–12 take TELPAS online assessments.

Testing Calendar

Language Proficiency Assessment Committees

LPACs make testing decisions for EB students, including test accommodations, alternate tests, etc.

Allowable Accommodations for Students Taking TELPAS

There are a variety of accommodations available for TELPAS. In addition, TEA developed TELPAS Alternate which is an alternate English language proficiency assessment for EB students that have the most significant cognitive disabilities. Please contact your child’s teacher for more information on accommodations for TELPAS and on TELPAS Alternate.
